RECAP
Ana Julfayan:
- Ana started on music video sets during the MTV era, working as a camera operator, a time when women were rarely present in the film industry.
- She attended film school and climbed the ranks, honing her storytelling skills by working in writers' rooms and understanding what it means to be a creative.
- Ana observes that the industry often puts people in rigid roles, and there are those who act as liaisons between departments.
- She emphasizes how accessible information now allows us to become multi-hyphenates, blending various skills and roles.
- Ana produced a six-episode show called "Seekers," which focused on Indigenous healers, showcasing her storytelling expertise.
Rose Odeh:
- Rose studied music and in the 90s worked as a temp in a marketing agency led by a creative, where she learned various skills and gained diverse experiences.
- She aimed to build strong internet marketing campaigns as the internet was emerging, making her difficult to categorize since she had experience in multiple areas.
- Rose highlights the importance of expanding knowledge beyond a singular focus, learning about infrastructure and other facets outside just directing or producing.
- She believes that expanding one's scope not only grows your skills but also broadens professional relationships and networks.
Collaboration Insights:
- Both Ana and Rose stress that in creative projects, the project itself should take precedence, though it may be challenging to let creatives work within set guidelines.
- Ana explains that artists have a specific vision, and when working as a brand, their work reflects their interpretation, while creatives adapt their skills to meet brand/client goals.
- Neither role is deemed superior; both are necessary for bringing different perspectives to a project.
- Finding collaborative partners involves asking questions, trial and error, and seeing potential collaborations even with those outside the traditional creative industry.
- Collaboration often leads to bigger and better outcomes, as diverse inputs enrich the creative process.
